SUNRIVER, Ore. - One round into the first golf tournament of the 2005-06 season, Wake Forest is tied for seventh place out of 15 of the nation's top men's college golf teams at the Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview. The 54-hole event continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at the par 72 Crosswater Golf Club.
The Preview, which was delayed for 30 minutes this morning because of frost, features the top 14 finishers of last year's NCAA Championship as well as the University of Portland, which is serving as host.
Wake Forest shot a cumulative 8-over par 296 and is 12 strokes off the pace. Georgia had four players shoot even par or better as the Bulldogs staked a six-stroke first round. The Bulldogs came in with a 284 (-4) at the par-72, 7671-yard layout. UNLV is six strokes back at 290, while Kentucky (291), Arizona (292) and Georgia Tech (294) round out the top five. Augusta State (295) is in sixth place and New Mexico is tied with Wake Forest in seventh place.
Deacon sophomore Webb Simpson is tied for fourth place after shooting a solid 2-under par 70 on Monday. Junior Sean Moore is tied for 16th place after a 1-over par 73. Senior Doug Manchester turned in a 4-over 76 and senior Kyle Reifers recorded a 5-over 77. Sophomore Chris McCartin struggled to an 8-over par 80.
Brian Harmon (Georgia), Seung-su Han (UNLV) and Andy Winings (Kentucky) are tied atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under par 69. Georgia's Chris Kirk (-1), Michael Green (E) and Kevin Kisner (E) provided the balanced scoring for the Bulldogs. Only 15 of the 75 golfers finished at even par or better.
