Track and Field Completes Day Two at ACC Outdoors

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams closed out the second day of the 2006 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Friday. The men's team finished the day in eighth place with 21 points and the women stand in 12th with three points after day two.
Freshman Brent LaRue finished the second five events of the decathlon and placed third overall in the event, earning six points for the team. LaRue set a personal record in the javelin throw with a toss of 50.90 meters. The Kernersville, N.C. native closed out the decathlon by placing second in the 1500 meter run. He finished with 7066 points, just 35 points behind second place finisher Brent Hobbs of Clemson. Clemson's Ryan Koontz took the overall title with 7371 points.
In the long jump, junior Kevin Marion placed third overall with a distance of 7.56 meters. That mark broke the school record he previously set at the Sea Ray Relays a week ago. Sophomore Kerry Major jumped a personal best 7.53 meters on his final attempt to take fourth place. The two scored 11 points for the Deacons. Seth Yetter added four points for the Deacs with a fifth place showing in the high jump.
In the preliminary sprinting events, Wake Forest placed several athletes into Saturday's finals. In the 400 meter dash, senior Willie Idlette ran a personal best and second fastest time in school history of 46.93 seconds. Michael Bingham added a time of 47.85 seconds, and Eric Seely finished the event in 47.56 seconds to join Idlette in the finals.
In the men's 100 meter dash, Kevin Marion ran a time of 10.40 seconds to qualify for the finals. Mike Loyd ran a time of 10.56 seconds and Kerry Major's 10.64 seconds also reached Saturday's final.
In one of the more impressive performances, the Deacs took the top three spots in the 200 meter dash preliminaries with Marion running a team season best and personal best time of 20.90 seconds. Seely placed second with a time of 21.06 and Bingham third with a time of 21.09 seconds. Each of the three won their individual heat. Loyd also qualified for the finals with a time of 21.19 seconds.
In the 110 meter high hurdles, Loyd finished third with a season best time of 14.10 seconds and will compete in the finals on Saturday as well.
Senior Brad Wharton also qualified for the 1500 meter finals by running a time of 3:48.50 in the preliminaries. That time marked a season best for Wharton and the Deacons this year.
On the women's side, Wake Forest's three team points came from Melissa Council in the heptathlon. The sophomore placed in sixth after scoring 4692 points. Molly Kennedy placed ninth in the event as well for the Deacons. Council will also compete in the 400 meter dash finals on Saturday after running a time of 54.97 seconds in the preliminary.
Freshman Nicole Schappert qualified for the finals in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:31.32.
Saturday's events will begin at 10:00 am with the women's javelin. The running events will kick off at 1:00 pm with the men's 4x100 meter relay. The final event tomorrow will be the women's 4x400 meter relay at approximately 4:32 pm. All the action is being held at Kentner Stadium on the Wake Forest campus. Admission is free.
