PALO ALTO, Calif. - Redshirt sophomore Alex Hirsch lost in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship to Stanford's Whitney Deason, 2-6, 6-3, 4-6. The No. 44 player in the nation, Hirsch was unable to advance in the 64-player field. The trip to the individual tournament was Hirsch's first and with it she was the 17th Demon Deacon to participate in the championship.
Compiling a team-best 25-11 overall record during the 2006 season, Hirsch defeated seven ranked opponents while playing the entire year at the No. 1 spot for the Demon Deacons. In addition, her career winning percentage of .704 (50-21) puts her in the fifth position in the Wake Forest record books.
"Alex has worked very hard on the court to be one of the top players in the ACC," Wake Forest head coach Chad Skorupka said. "She has battled back from arm surgery in her freshman year and where she is now is a great achievement for both her and Wake Forest tennis."
Hirsch and the Demon Deacons will return all players next season to a team that finished with a 14-10 overall record in 2006.
