No. 14 Deacons Crush Hokies, 6-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 14th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team rolled past No. 69 Virginia Tech, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in a conference match at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. The Demon Deacons improved their record to 9-4, including a 3-2 conference mark, while the Hokies dropped to 9-7 and remain winless in conference with a 0-4 record.
Wake set the bar high quickly winning matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles for the point. At No. 3, Sierra Poske and Christine Simpson handed Ashley James and Bethan James an 8-1 defeat, while Ashlee Davis and Alexandra Hirsh followed with an 8-2 victory over Inga Beerman and J.J. Larson at the third spot.
The Hokies received a doubles victory at No. 2 where Jessica Brouwer and Abbey Walker defeated Anna Jerman and Sasha Kulikova 6-4.
In singles, the Deacs took five of the six singles matches en route to the 6-1 win. At No. 6, Simpson defeated Walker in straight 6-2 sets, while Poske put away Larson in straight 6-3 sets. Kulikova clinched the match for the Deacons with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Ashley James.
The visiting team kept the singles victories coming as Jerman defeated Long 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 103 Davis defeated Porushkevich 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.
"We got off to a great start in doubles and we were able to keep that momentum heading into the singles matches," said head coach Chad Skorupka.
Virginia Tech's lone point of the match came at No. 1 singles where Beerman upset 60th-ranked Hirsch in the super-breaker.
The Deacs conclude their road schedule tomorrow with a noon match at No. 63 Virginia.
