
Deacs Take Four Event Titles at WFU Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest track and field squad set three new school records, posted four first place finishes and 16 top five finishes at the Wake Forest Open on Friday and Saturday at Kentner Stadium.
WFU Meet Highlights
Men
Senior Kerry Major tied the NCAA provisional mark for the 100m dash in the preliminary round, clocking a time of 10.55. In the finals, Major finished second overall with a 10.64 run.
Freshman Allan Lunkenheimer had a solid performance in his first official race at Kentner Stadium, taking third place in the 400m run with a 48.04 finish. Sophomore Jon Reid was followed right behind with a fourth place, 48.21 finish.
Senior Chris Catton led Demon Deacon competitors in the 800m run, placing eighth overall with a time of 1:53.94.
Patrick Russell was the lone WFU representative in the 3000m run and took a second place finish with an 8:32.01 mark. The time was also a personal best for the Lockport, N.Y. native.
Taylor Wildman's 14-07.25 pole vault performance was the fifth best performance on Saturday, while Kerry Major's 23-02.00 long jump took sixth place overall.
Thomas Sensing and Boomer Petersen both placed in the men's shot put top ten, with Sensing throwing a 51-02.25, while Petersen placed ninth with a 49-09.00 mark.
Brian Chaput of Javelin USA set a new Kentner Stadium facility record on Friday, hitting a 79.97m/262-04 mark, shattering the former record of 73.18, set in 2006.
Women
Melissa Council had the first of Wake's four first place finishes, taking the 400m title with a 55.37 second run. Nicole Castronouva placed eighth in the same event, clocking a 56.90 finish.
Carly Mauch's 45.49m/149-03 Javelin throw was good for an NCAA provisional mark and set a new Wake Forest record. Mauch bettered her previous school record by nearly seven feet (43.47m/142-7).
Caroline Vaughn broke the school 100m hurdle record, running a 13.68 to top her former personal best and school record of 13.73, set last season. The high mark was also within the NCAA provisional standards, possibly sending her to the East Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla. Michelle Loyd's personal best time of 14.35 in the 100m hh was the ninth best time overall.
Loyd met NCAA provisional marks with her 59.39 first place finish in the 400m hurdles. The mark was a new school record, replacing Alex Gove's 1:00.03 high mark set last season.
The Wake Forest women's relay team, composed of Molly Kennedy, Nicole Castronouva, Melissa Council and Michelle Loyd, also set a new program best, combining for a 46.37 second finish. In 2007, Caroline Vaughn, Melissa Council, Ashley Spooner and Nicole Castronouva set the former school record of 46.46.
Nicole Castronouva tied her personal best in the 200m dash and took second place in the event with a 24.25 finish.
Freshman Anna Nosenko was the first collegiate finisher in the women's1500m dash, taking second place overall with a 4:28.77 mark. Senior Caitlin Chrisman placed seventh in race with a time of 4:38.50.
Senior Jill Ahrens opened her outdoor slate with an 11-05.75 pole vault performance, taking second place in the event.
Next up for the Demon Deacons will be the Yellow Jacket Invitational, set for March 28-29 on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta.
