BLACKSBURG, Va. - Both the men's and women's cross country teams finished third at the Virginia Tech Invitational at the Tech Cross Country Course in Blacksburg, Va., on Friday. Allie Kieffer finished with a time of 16:24.1 in the 5-kilometer event and a second-place overall finish. Greg Billington paced the Deacons on the men's side with a 24:50.9 time and a 14th-overall individual finish in the 8-kilometer race.
"They did a great job," head coach Annie Bennett said of her teams. "I'm just really pleased with how they did overall."
"Allie Kieffer had a race of a lifetime and that was really exciting. Dina Nosenko raced for the first time as a Deacon and did an exceptional job, finishing ninth, as did Laura Rapp who placed 15th. It was a team performance and our kids did a very good job out there today. I was very proud of them."
Caitlin Crawford and Cate Berenato finished in the top 25 and also scored for the Deacons. Florida State and Virginia Tech finished first and second at the meet, with 2007 All-American Tasmin Fanning of Virginia Tech crossing the finish line first in the women's race.
The Wake Forest men's cross country team placed third of six teams at the Virginia Tech Invitational, marking its best finish of the season to date. Florida State came in first overall, recording the top-four individual times at the event, and Virginia Tech placed second.
Greg Billington, Tom Morrison and Paul Loeser all finished the meet as top-30 contenders, while Ben Morrow and Nicholas Lepley rounded out the scoring for the men's team. Coach Bennett is pleased with the progression that she has seen through only the third meet of the season.
"I was really happy with our freshmen Tom Morrison and Paul Loeser. Paul took a big step from last week and it was apparent through his race today."
