WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 3 Wake Forest field hockey team handed seventh-ranked James Madison its first loss of the season, topping the Dukes 3-1 at Kentner Stadium.
With the win, the Demon Deacons are 4-0 heading into their first official conference matchup with Duke on Saturday in Winston-Salem. JMU is now 2-1 for 2008 play.
James Madison's Lauren Walls scored just six minutes into regulation, weaving her way through the striking circle to slip the ball through the legs of WF goalkeeper Crystal Duffield. Sunday's game was the third match of the last four where the Wake Forest opponent has scored the opening goal.
Melissa Martin and Minou Gimbrere teamed up to counter the JMU score less than 10 minutes later, pushing the ball through from the 10 yards out on the left side of the Dukes' goal.
The Demon Deacons gained the lead in the next possession, converting on a penalty corner. Melissa Martin served as the pusher while Michelle Kasold set the ball up for Gimbrere. Gimbrere sent the ball flying through the defenders to Hilary Moore who was waiting just a few yards from the goal and tapped the ball in. The goal was Moore's fourth of the season while Kasold picked up her fourth assist of 2008 in the play.
Gimbrere added the final goal ten minutes before the end of regulation to set the score at 3-1.
The Demon Deacons out-shot the Dukes 15-8 and had a 6-4 penalty corner edge. Winning goalkeeper Crystal Duffield had three saves during the game while JMU's Kelsey Cutchins posted six saves against the Deacs.
