BLACKSBURG, Va. - A number of Wake Forest newcomers got their feet wet on the opening night of the Hokie Invitational at Rector Fieldhouse on the campus of Virginia Tech.
This is the second straight week that the Demon Deacons are competing at Virginia Tech as the Deacs lifted the lid on the 2009 season at the Virginia Tech Invitational last weekend.
Senior Phillip Warsaw led a young group of Demon Deacons that were in action Friday night, as he finished third in the 600-meter dash in a time of 1:23.77, which was just six-tenths of a second off his personal-best. Freshman Justin Bookheimer collected the best-finish of his young career, taking fifth in a time of 1:24.22.
In the women's 1,000-meter run, freshman Molly Binder crossed the line with a time of 2:57.22 to finish fifth in the event while fellow freshman Laura Rapp won the second heat with a time of 3:00.26 to finish seventh overall.
Sophomore Kim Vos ran a solid 1:37.25 to finish sixth in the women's 600-meter dash while teammate Alex Gove was right on her heels at 1:37.27 to finish seventh.
Freshman Michelle Lange, competing in her first collegiate meet, cleared a height of 10-10.25 in the pole vault on her final attempt at her second height. She wound up finishing fourth in the event.
Freshman Kevin Smith took sixth in the men's 300-meter dash with a time of 35.19 while fellow freshman Alex Hill won his heat in a time of 35.70 to finish tenth overall.
