Track Opens Season At Virginia Tech Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track team will get the 2009 season underway this weekend when they travel to the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
This event will be the first of five trips the Demon Deacons make to the Rector Field House in the next month and a half. Virginia Tech will also play host to the 2009 ACC Indoor Championships on Feb. 26-28.
The weekend's events will be the first action for many of the Wake Forest newcomers as well as a return to action for 2008 Olympian Michael Bingham, who will participate in the 500-meter dash. Junior standout Jonathan Reid will also be competing in the 200- and 300-meter dashes while fellow junior Thomas Sensing will compete in the weight throw and the shot put.
Last season at the Virginia Tech Invite, Sensing set a then personal-best in the shot put with a toss of 48-04.75.
On the women's side, junior Nicole Castronuova is set to compete in three events this weekend; the 55-, 200- and 300-meter dashes. Fellow juniors Alex Gove and Caroline Vaughn will each run the 55-meter hurdles while Gove will also take part in the 500-meter dash.
Gove and Castronuova set a school record last season at the Virginia Tech Invite, as the pair joined current senior Melissa Council and graduated senior Michelle Duffey to break the 4x400-meter relay school record. The same team went on run four races under the previous record of 3:48.88 during the season with their best performance of 3:45.56 earning them a 4th place finish at the ACC Championships.

The Demon Deacons will turn around and head right back to Blacksburg next weekend, Jan. 16-17, for the Hokie Invitational.
