Field Hockey Falls 3-2 in OT at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to third-ranked Virginia on Sunday afternoon at U-Hall Turf Field in Virginia.
Wake Forest is now 8-4 and the Cavaliers improved to 13-1 for 2009. The match did not count towards the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
The teams stayed evenly matched in shots throughout the game. Virginia had the winning edge with more offensive attack during the extra period, firing three shots while Wake couldn't find one. Virginia capitalized on two penalty corner opportunities, with Michelle Vittese scoring the game-winning goal during the second attempt.
Liza Casella scored the first goal for the Deacons, taking assists from Lauren Greenwald and Melissa Martin during a penalty corner. The goal set the match at 1-1, following the first score of the game by UVA's Paige Selenski.
Lizzie Rae put the Deacons in front 2-1 with a goal ten minutes into the second half. Liza Casella fired the shot during the penalty corner and Rae pushed through to tip the ball in. Inga Stockel equalized the score with a penalty corner goal in the 60th minute.
Next weekend Wake Forest will continue road play, facing Louisville and Providence at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
