BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Wake Forest women's team finished sixth of 41 squads at the Brooks Paul Short Run on Friday in one of the largest annual cross country meets nationwide. Sophomore Anna Nosenko finished eighth overall and sophomore Dina Nosenko placed ninth in a field of 362 runners in the women's Gold Division 6-kilometer event. The men's team finished 31st of 43 groups in the Gold Division 8K, with true freshman Garret Drogosch and redshirt senior Jeremy Fisico leading the way for the Deacons.
The women's team, ranked fourth in the Southeast Region, continued to look strong in its first 6K of the season at the Paul Short Run. Anna Nosenko paced the Deacons for the third consecutive meet this season with a time of 20:12. Sophomore Dina Nosenko was only nine seconds behind to place ninth overall with her time of 20:21.
"I'm super pleased with [Anna and Dina]. They did great. They had a rough week because they'd been sick so they're capable of finishing higher, but emotionally they did some good things out there," head coach Annie Bennett said after the meet.
Junior Marley Burns scored for the Deacons with a 54th-overall finish after a time of 21:35. Redshirt sophomore Caitlin Crawford finished 91st overall, scoring 90th, after completing the course in 21:51. Rounding out the top five for Wake Forest, redshirt freshman Casey Fowler scored 152 points, finishing 163rd overall, with a time of 22:25.
"We made some pretty big progress but we just need our whole group to be up a little higher. The bottom line is the team knows they're capable of doing more. For some of them, this was their first race with almost 400 runners after usually racing with 100 and that can throw you off. It's very different being in a race with 400 runners compared to 100," added Bennett.
Fourth-ranked West Virginia captured the team title with a score of 105. Sophomore Neely Spence of Shippensburg won the 6K with a time of 19:58.
On the men's side, the Deacons placed 31st in the Gold Division, after racing in the White Division last year.
Freshman Garret Drogosch finished first for the youthful Deacons for the second time this season. He completed the 8K with a time of 25:01, good for 107th overall out of a field of 386 runners.
Redshirt senior Jeremy Fisico was just seconds behind Drogosch, finishing the course in 25:08 for 129th overall.
Freshman Devin Huizenga scored for the Deacons in his first meet with a time of 25:28 and a 176th-overall finish. Sophomore Paul Loeser and junior Greg Billington completed the top five places for the Deacs, running within a second of each other for 188 and 190 points.
"It was exciting to see six guys within 33 seconds of each other. We're definitely moving in the right direction and we're really happy with the group we have," said Bennett. "We're moving in the right direction but we still need more time with these guys because we're relying heavily on a group of freshmen and that transition to 10K out of high school is tough."
One of the teams that Wake Forest defeated was the Virginia Military Institute, a squad ranked ahead of them at 15th in the Southeast Region rankings. VMI finished 39th overall.
Indiana surprised a lot of people with its Gold Division title, while No. 7 Iona College came in second. The individual champion was NC State's sophomore Ryan Hill with a time of 23:40.
Another group of Wake Forest harriers compete in the Hagan Stone Park Classic on Saturday, Oct. 3. The entire squads will race again at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C., on Friday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m.
