As the decade comes to a close later this month, WakeForestSports.com will look back on the past 10 years in Demon Deacon athletics. Today, the focus is on the decade that was in Wake Forest women's tennis.
10. March 2006 - Three Deacons Rank in the ITA Top 100
Demon Deacons Ashlee Davis, Ana Jerman and Alex Hirsch all earned rankings in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's singles poll in the Spring of 2006. Davis and Hirsch also appeared on the doubles charts during the 2006 season.
9. 2002 - USTA Names ITC Facility of the Year
After construction completed in 1997, the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center quickly became one of the most popular venues in the region. The Indoor Tennis Center is the only university court in the area that houses eight indoor courts, making it an ideal venue for both collegiate and professional events. In 2002 the USTA recognized the Indoor Tennis Center as the Facility of the Year. The first class venue has helped both tennis teams catch the eyes of talented recruits throughout the decade.
8. April 5, 2000 - Wake Forest Snaps Duke's 116-Match Win Streak in Durham
The third-ranked Demon Deacons defeated Duke 6-3, ending the Blue Devils' 116-match win streak. The Deacs captured four of the six singles matches. Adria Engel defeated Dukes' Megan Miller at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-2). At No. 2 singles, Bea Bielik defeated Kathy Sell (6-1, 6-4). Janet Bergman defeated Katie Granson at No. 3 singles (3-6, 6-1, 6-1). Winning the No. 6 singles match was Annemarie Milton, defeating Prim Siripipat (5-7, 6-4, 6-2).
7. April 27, 2004 - Ashlee Davis is ACC Rookie of the Year
Davis became the fourth Demon Deacon to receive the ACC Rookie of the Year award since its inception in 1994. Davis finished her freshman campaign with an 18-13 record at the No. 1, 2 and 3 singles flights. The Anderson, Ind., native was twice named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week in 2004.
6. April 28, 2000 - Adria Engel named ACC Player and Rookie of the Year
Freshman Adria Engel was named the ACC Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year. Engel also earned the ITA's National Rookie of the Year award and claimed All-American status in singles. By the end of the 2000 season, Engel compiled an overall record of 45-10, and set a record that still stands as the most single-season wins in school history.
5. September 24, 2000 -Bielik Makes History at ITA Grand Slam Event
Bea Bielek became the first woman in history to sweep an ITA grand slam event, winning both singles and doubles (with Janet Bergman) at the National Clay Court Championships.
4. May 2002 - Bergman Rewrites Wake Forest Record Book
Wake Forest senior Janet Bergman rewrote the Wake record books during her Deacon career. At the end of her senior year Bergman became WFU's all-time leader in both singles and doubles victories, with 129 singles wins and 117 doubles. Bergman surpassed the previous singles record holder, Terry Ann Zawacki, by 13 wins and finished her career 23 victories ahead of Monica Kowalewski, the previous doubles leader. She became just the second player in school history (Zawacki was the first) to be named to the All-ACC Team four times.
3. March 1, 2007 - Deacons Upset 4th-ranked UNC
The 21st-ranked Demon Deacons clinched their highest upset since head coach Chad Skorupka took over the program in the Fall of 2005 when they topped fourth-ranked North Carolina 4-3 in Winston-Salem. With the scored tied at 3, the match came down to the winner of the contest between Alex Hirsch and Jenna Long at the No. 1 position to decide the team winner.
2. March 2000 - Deacs Reach No. 2 in ITA Poll
In the Spring of 2000 the Demon Deacons reached No. 2 in the ITA Poll, the highest mark to date. During the same season the Deacon finished conference play 8-0 and became the first team in program history to clinch an ACC regular season title. Wake Forest also put together a school-record 18-match win streak en route to a record 24 season victories.
1. June 10, 2002 - Bielik Named National Player of the Year
In June of 2002, Bea Bielik became the most honored women's tennis athlete in Wake Forest history when was tabbed National Player of the Year by the ITA. A three-time All-American, Bielik finished the 2001-2002 season ranked No. 1 in the Omni Hotels national singles rankings with a 35-2 singles record - giving her 100 career singles victories. The winner of the Honda Award, given annually to the top collegiate women's tennis player, Bielik was also the recipient of the Mary Garber Award, given to the ACC Female Athlete of the Year. She was named the ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Year and received the Marge Crisp Award, given annually to the Wake Forest Female Athlete of the Year.
