STATESBORO, Ga. -- Sophomore Daniel Meggs made three birdies and an eagle in his career-low round of 4-under 68 on Saturday to lead the Wake Forest men's golf team to a 287 in the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic at The Farm Golf Club.
The Deacons started the day in ninth place but thanks to under-par rounds by Meggs and fellow sophomore Lee Bedford, Wake pulled into a tie for fifth with Georgia Tech at 9-over par.
"We played a little more solid today and made a few more birdies," said Wake Forest assistant coach Dan Walters. "They call Saturday on (PGA) Tour `Moving Day' and fortunately, we moved in the right direction today. I think the lead is still within striking distance and we're only a couple of shots out of third."
Chattanooga carded a round of 4-under 284 and holds a 2-shot lead over Tennessee at 1-under par. Stephan Jaeger made six birdies and an eagle to fire the low-round of the day, a 6-under 66, for the Mocks.
Georgia's Russell Henley also fired a 66 on Saturday and leads the individual race by two-shots over teammate Harris English and first-round leader Jonathan Randolph. Henley is 7-under through two rounds.
South Carolina and Alabama are each tied for third at 7-over par, just two-shots ahead of the Deacs.
Meggs started his day with three-straight birdies at holes 2, 3 and 4 and would make the turn at 3-under par. He bogeyed No. 10 but then eagled the par-5 12th to get to 4-under for the day. Meggs then made five-straight pars before pulling off some heroics at the last.
He snapped his drive into the think trees to the left of the 18th fairway and was not able to find the ball. He was forced to play his provisional ball, which had found the fairway. Hitting his fourth-shot, Meggs holed his eight-iron for the routine par.
"Dan played a really solid round and had a great finish," said Walters. "He got off to a really nice start and was able to hold that throughout most of the round."
Meggs opened the tournament with a tough round of 78 and will start the final round in a tie for 19th at 2-over par.
Bedford had a bit of a roller coaster day, on his way to a 1-under 71. He birdied holes four and five to get to 2-under but gave them right back with bogeys at seven and eight.
A birdie at the tenth, an eagle at the 12th and a birdie at No. 13 got him to 4-under for the day but he would then double the 14th and bogey the 16th coming to shoot at 71. He will start the final round on Sunday in a tie for 14th at 1-over par.
Freshman Evan Beck shook off a double-bogey at the ninth and posted a round of 3-over 75. Coupled with his opening round 71, Beck is tied for 19th at 2-over.
Senior Travis Wadkins made a total of four birdies on Saturday, including two in his final three holes, to card a solid 73. He shot a 76 yesterday and will head into the final round tied for 33rd at 5-over par. Classmate Preston Yates posted his second straight 77 and is tied for 50th with a round to play.
The final round will begin Sunday morning and live scoring will be available via www.golfstat.com.
