CHAPEL HILL, NC - Senior Caroline Vaughn recorded season-bests in three of five events on her way to a sixth-place finish in the women's pentathlon at the UNC Combined Events Friday at the Eddie Smith Field House.
Vaughn led four Demon Deacons with a total of 3,468 points. Freshman Gwen Ricco came in seventh with 3,341 points while senior Alex Gove was close behind in eighth at 3,288 and freshman Maddy Ricco came in tenth with 3,220 points.
Vaughn got the day started with a season-best in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in 8.62. Gove also topped her previous season-best with a time of 8.96. In the high jump, Vaughn cleared an indoor-best 5-2.50 while Maddy Ricco notched a mark of 4-8.75.
Maddy Ricco also turned in a good mark in the long jump, bettering her previous season-best by almost two feet with a jump of 17-3.25. Gwen Ricco had the best jump of the quartet, leaping 18-0.50. The shot put brought three season-bests as Gove (32-10.25), Maddy Ricco (32-1.50) and Vaughn (27-1.75) all bested their previous highs.
The final event of the day was the 800m run and the Deacon foursome would take four of the top five spots led by Gove. She crossed the line first overall with a solid time of 2:22.52. Gwen Ricco then took third in 2:27.77 followed by her sister Maddy (2:29.63) in fourth and Vaughn (2:29.77) in fifth.
On the first day of the men's heptathlon, sophomore Alex Hill had a number of solid performances and stood fifth with a total of 2,638 points. He finished second in the 60m dash with a season-best 7.19 and then tossed the shot put a season-long 37-10.50.
The men's pentathlon was scheduled to finish on Saturday but the inclement weather has canceled the day's events.
The next full team event will be next weekend at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Va.
