Demon Deacons Open VT Challenge With Strong Performances

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Molly Binder led the Wake Forest track and field teams Friday night with a victory in the 600m dash on the opening night of the Virginia Tech Challenge in Rector Field House.
Binder ran a superb personal-best of 1:33.52 in the event. She also won her heat by over a second. This is the third-straight solid performance for Binder who currently ranks fourth in the conference in the 800m run. Teammate Laura Rapp finished 17th in the 600m run Friday night with a time of 1:41.20.
In the women's 60m hurdles, senior Caroline Vaughn made her second-straight final with a prelim run of 8.46. It was her best time of the season and was just .03 seconds off her school record. In the finals, Vaughn turned in a time of 8.58 and finished third overall.
Fellow senior Alex Gove ran an 8.88 in the prelims which bested her previous personal-best by .01 of a second.
In the 1,000m run, junior Caitlin Crawford finished second in her heat and third overall with a time of 2:53.07.
For the second-straight week, sophomore Carmen Green turned in an indoor-best in the weight throw with a mark of 46-1.50. Green would finish 12th in the event.
Sisters Gwen and Maddy Ricco each jumped season-bests in the long jump, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. Gwen recorded a mark of 18-4.25 and Maddy posted a mark of 18-0.50. Vaughn finished just behind the two in 12th place with a jump of 17-6.25.
Six different Demon Deacons competed in the women's 200m dash led by senior Nicole Castronuova. She crossed the line in a season-best 24.70 and finished seventh in the event. Vaughn and Gove were the next two Deacons across the line as Vaughn was 16th at 25.23 and Gove was 20th at 25.40. Gwen Ricco finished 22nd at 25.44 and Maddy Ricco was 23rd at 25.50. Anneve Waithe rounded out the group with a time of 27.51.
On the men's side, senior Jon Reid won his heat of the 200m dash and finished fourth overall with a season-best time of 21.88. Alex Hill finished 22nd with a time of 22.74. Hill also turned in a season-best 8.68 in the prelims of the 60m hurdles earlier in the night.
In the men's unseeded pole vault competition, Trey Blanton tied his season-best mark with a vault of 15-9.00 to finish fourth overall.
The teams will conclude the Virginia Tech Challenge on Saturday beginning with field events at 11 am and track events at noon.
