GREENSBORO, NC - Seniors Brent LaRue and Alex Gove each ran solid times in the 400m hurdles and led a group of Demon Deacons on the first day of the NCAA Preliminaries at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of NC A&T.
LaRue got off to a good start in his heat of the 400m hurdles and was able to open up a lead down the backstretch. He continued to hold the lead around the final turn and cruised down the final straight away to take the heat with a good time of 50.91. LaRue takes the seventh-fastest opening round time to Friday evening's quarterfinals which are set to begin at 7:00 pm.
Gove went out in perhaps the fastest of the six women's 400m hurdle heats. She ran a personal-best time of 58.67 and finished fifth in her heat. But her heat was the only heat in which five athletes advanced to Friday night's quarterfinals.
Fellow senior Caroline Vaughn also ran a solid 400m hurdle race Thursday afternoon but her time of 1:00.37 was not good enough to advance. She will now focus on the 100m hurdles which will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday.
Sophomore Dina Nosenko came into the first round of the women's 1,500m run with high hopes after a strong outdoor season. Her heat got off to a slow start and never really picked up. Nosenko spent most of the race in the middle of the lead pack and as the field spread out over the final 200 meters, Nosenko found herself drifting towards the end of the lead group. She finished the heat in seventh place at 4:26.23 and wound-up just three spots short of moving on to the quarterfinals.
Senior Jon Reid suffered a similar fate in the men's 400m dash. He got a bit of a tough draw, running in lane one, but he still ran a solid race and turned in a time of 46.86. After waiting out the other five heats, Reid came up just two spots short of advancing to the quarterfinals.
In the women's javelin Thursday morning, senior Carly Mauch posted a mark of 132-03 (40.32m) on her third attempt of the opening round but that left her in 31st place. Mauch qualified for the event two weeks ago at the Georgia Tech Invitational with a season-best mark of 148-05, which is just under a foot off her school-record of 149-03.
Friday's action will begin with freshman Ben Lincoln in the men's javelin competition starting at 10 am. Vaughn will then run in the opening round of the women's 100m hurdles at 5:00 pm followed by LaRue in the quarterfinals of the men's 400m hurdles at 7:00 pm and Gove in women's 400m hurdles at 7:15 pm. Graduate student Erin Redden will close out the evening in the quarterfinals of the women's 3,000m steeplechase which is set to begin at 9:10 pm.
