Wake Forest Wraps Up Competition at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, VA. - The Wake Forest women's track and field team concluded their first meet of the season Saturday evening in the Rector Field House at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
A pair of juniors turned in top-ten performances in the field events, as Erin Brooks finished sixth overall in the long jump with a mark of 5.62 meters, and Sarah Brobeck placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 12.77 meters.
Senior Nicole Castronuova led the Deacs in the sprints, finishing 18th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.04 seconds. She was also a member of the Deacs' 4x400m relay team that placed 17th overall in a time of 4:00.85.
The Deacs will return to Virginia Tech again next weekend to race in the Hokie Invitational. The meet will begin late Friday afternoon and conclude Saturday evening.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown from the second and final day of the Virginia Tech Invitational:
200m Dash
Freshman Mytoia Gathings marked her collegiate debut with a 24th place finish in the 200m dash, crossing the line in 25.81 seconds. Brooks finished in 32nd place with a time of 27.01 seconds.
400m Dash
The Deacs were well represented in the 400 meter dash, with three runners competing in the event. Castronuova led the way, crossing the line in 59.04 to claim 18th place. Sophomore Myesha Barr finished directly behind in 19th place with a time of 59.96, and freshman Jordyn Glaser rounded out the event in a time of 1:00.50 to claim 20th place.
4x400m Relay
The 4x400m relay team of Barr, Castronuova, Glaser, and Gwen Ricco finished in 17th place overall with a time of 4:00.85.
High Jump
Junior Samantha Howell tied for ninth place in the high jump, as she cleared a height of 1.60 meters.
Shot Put
Brobeck turned in a top-ten performance for the Deacs, finishing in eighth place overall with a throw of 12.77 meters. Gwen Ricco finished 16th in the event with a throw of 10.81 meters, and Maddy Ricco was close behind in 19th place with a throw of 10.08 meters.
Long Jump
Brooks placed sixth in the long jump to lead the Deacons, as she reached a mark of 5.62 meters. Maddy Ricco claimed 30th place with a jump of 4.31 meters.
