WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Looking to build on a three-game winning streak, the Wake Forest field hockey team will head to Lynchburg, Va. to take on Liberty on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
The matchup with the Flames was added earlier this week, and it will be the first time that the two schools have competed against each other.
Having won three straight, the Demon Deacons are now at 5-8 on the year, while the Flames enter Friday's contest as winners of two in a row with a 5-6 record.
Wake Forest picked up a pair of wins last weekend over Temple (4-1) and Princeton (3-2, OT) before handing in-state rival Davidson a 7-1 defeat under the rain and lights of Kentner Stadium on Tuesday night.
During the winning streak, sophomore Kari Walkley has led the way offensively with team-highs of four goals and nine points. She scored a pair of goals against Temple and against Davidson while also dishing out an assist against the Wildcats. On the season, Walkley leads the team with eight goals and 17 points.
Fellow sophomore Jess McFadyen has also provided a spark, as she has scored a goal in all three recent victories. She connected on a penalty stroke in both games over the weekend and deflected a shot into the cage against Davidson with no time remaining on the clock.
In addition to Walkley and McFadyen, junior Lizzie Rae (2), senior Kaitlin Piosa and sophomore Taylor Rhea all scored goals against the Wildcats. Seniors Adelaide Knott and Cristen Atchison, junior Jillian Anzalone and freshman Molly Murphy picked up assists in the contest.
Although Wake Forest sits below .500 on the year at 5-8, the Demon Deacons are outscoring their opponents 32-29. This is due in large part to six of Wake Forest's eight losses coming by just one goal, including two overtime losses.
Rae has been the second-highest goal scorer on the team this year with five, and she has posted a team-best four assists. Rhea and freshman Anna Kozniuk have both scored four goals apiece, while Kozniuk and senior Lauren Greenwald both have three assists.
In goal, Wake Forest has been led by junior Kaitlyn Ruhf, who has made 50 saves and enters the Liberty game with a 2.21 goals against average.
The Demon Deacons will return home for the remainder of the regular season, beginning on Tuesday when Radford travels to Kentner Stadium at 6 p.m. Wake Forest will end the year with ACC opponents Virginia (Oct. 22) and Boston College (Oct. 29).
