LYNCHBURG, VA. - The Wake Forest field hockey team ran its winning streak to four games on Friday afternoon with a 5-0 defeat of Liberty at the Multi-Sport Complex in Lynchburg, Va.
With the victory, the Deacons move to 6-8 in 2011 and have a chance to finish above .500 if they are able to win out in their final three matchups in the regular season. The Flames dropped to 5-7 on the season. The shutout was the first for Wake Forest since a 6-0 win against Appalachian State on Oct. 4, 2009.
The Deacs put on an amazing show of offensive force throughout the first half, racking up 19 shots in the first 29 minutes of the game. Liberty netminder Ann Jefferis showed fantastic effort between the posts as well, making the save on the first 13 shots on goal.
Sophomore Jess McFadyen finally solved the Flames' defense and fired in Wake's first goal of the game at the 28:19 mark. She has now scored in four consecutive games, the longest streak of any Deacon this season. Senior Lauren Greenwald, although not credited with an assist, set up the opportunity with a shot of her own that was saved by Jefferis. The goalie was unable to control it, however, and McFadyen collected the rebound and found the back of the cage.
Junior Lizzie Rae helped to break the game open early in the second half with a pair of goals in the 41st and 51st minutes. On the first, she charged through Liberty's defense and launched an unassisted shot into the back of the cage from the right side. Freshman Anna Kozniuk grabbed an assist on the second, as she fired a quick shot from the top of the circle that was deflected by Rae into the goal.
Sophomore Kari Walkley got in on the scoring in the 49th minute, notching her ninth goal of the season on an excellent pass from freshman Christine Conroe. Conroe placed the pass just wide of the right post and Walkley punched it in to add another tally for the Deacs.
At the 56:08 mark, junior Jillian Anzalone netted her first goal of 2011 to push the Wake advantage to 5-0. Sophomore Taylor Rhea was credited on the assist. Rhea fired from the left side at the top of the circle and Anzalone collected it just in front of the net before converting her shot attempt.
Senior Bronwen Gainsford made the start in goal for the Demon Deacons, taking the place of Kaitlyn Ruhf who had started every game this season. It was Gainsford's first start since Oct. 13, 2010, in a 4-3 victory over Radford. With the victory, she now owns a 3-1 record as the starter over the last two seasons.
The Deacons owned an almost unfathomable 31-1 advantage in shots for the matchup, with 20 of those being shots on goal. The disparity in corners also doomed the Flames, who trailed Wake in that category by a 14-1 margin.
Wake Forest will return to action on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. as it hosts the Radford Highlanders at Kentner Stadium in the first game of a season-ending three-game homestand. The final two games are both ACC contests against Virginia (Oct. 22) and Boston College (Oct. 29).
