WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team will face another weekend doubleheader on the road over the next two days as it travels north to face Temple and Princeton.
Currently, the squad has a 2-8 record in 2011 and is 0-3 in ACC play. However, six of the eight losses have been by only a single goal, and two of those have come in overtime.
On the Saturday leg of the trip, the Demon Deacons will stop in Philadelphia, Pa., for a 1:00 p.m. game against the Temple Owls at Geasey Field. Temple, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, holds a 3-9 overall record this season and will open conference play on Friday against Saint Joseph's. The Owls' last win came on Sep. 16 with a 2-1 victory over Delaware, but the team has dropped five straight since then.
After facing Temple, the Deacs will travel to Princeton, N.J., on Sunday for another 1:00 p.m. start time against the Princeton Tigers, who are 4-4 this season with a perfect 3-0 mark in Ivy League contests. The meeting at Class of '52 Stadium will be just the second all-time between the two schools. Princeton defeated Wake 3-1 in the NCAA Tournament last season to claim the 1-0 series lead.
Junior Lizzie Rae continues to lead the Deacons with nine points (three goals and three assists) on the season. The New Zealander also leads the team in shots by a wide margin as she has taken 34 in 10 contests, with 15 of them being credited as shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Ruhf, despite her record, has been stellar between the pipes for Wake Forest this season. She leads the ACC in total saves (46) and saves per game (4.60) while also holding the fourth-highest save percentage in the conference at .648, a mark that stands as the second-highest of her career.
Redshirt freshman Christine Conroe has also emerged as an important piece in the midfield as well. After missing all of last season due to an injury suffered in the preseason, she has started eight of Wake's 10 games. Conroe netted her first career assist in the 3-2 victory against Louisville on Sep. 4 and grabbed her first goal in the 7-1 romp over Delaware on Sep. 25.
Following this weekend's action, the Demon Deacons will return to Kentner Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 11, to face in-state foe Davidson. That tilt is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Wake's four remaining games will all be played at home, culminating in ACC contests against Virginia (Oct. 22) and Boston College (Oct. 29).
