Gathings Leads Deacs on Opening Day of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman Mytoia Gathings turned in a personal-best time of 12.17 seconds in the 100-meter dash to lead the Deacs Friday afternoon on the opening day of the Raleigh Relays at N.C. State's Paul Derr Track.
Five other Deacs finished in the top ten of their respective events, as Samantha Howell finished fourth in the high jump, Sarah Brobeck placed sixth in the shot put, and Carmen Green took seventh in the discus throw. Senior Marley Burns placed eighth in the 5,000-meters, and Allison Johnson finished in 9th place in the 400-meter hurdles.
Competition will resume Saturday morning, with track events starting at 9:45 a.m. and field events beginning at 10 a.m. The Deacs will have squads in a number of the relay events, including the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800-meter relays.
Below is an event-by-event breakdown of all the action from Day One of the Raleigh Relays.
100-Meter Dash
Freshman Mytoia Gathings continued to shine in the 100m, taking seventh overall in a field of 94 competitors. Gathings' time of 12.17 marked a new personal-best time, as she surpassed her previous time of 12.34 seconds set last weekend at the Wake Forest Open.
400-Meter Hurdles
Freshman Allison Johnson turned in her second top-ten performance of the season in as many weekends, finishing 9th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.01.
5,000-Meter Run
Racing in her first 5,000-meter run of the season, senior Marley Burns finished 8th overall in a time of 17:39.59. Burns was just 15 seconds off the first-place time of 17:24.74.
Shot Put
Junior Sarah Brobeck continued to lead the Deacs in the throws, as she finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 42-10.75 (13.07 meters).
High Jump
Junior Samantha Howell cleared a height of 5-05 (1.65 meters) to place fourth overall and match her personal-best mark set last weekend at the Wake Forest Open.
Long Jump
Sophomore Gwen Ricco turned in a mark of 14-04 (4.37 meters) to place 27th overall in the long jump.
Discus Throw
Junior Carmen Green threw for a distance of 141-8 (43.18 meters) to place seventh among 44 competitors in the discus throw.
