Ricco Takes Fifth in Heptathlon as Deacons Complete Weekend

LYNCHBURG, Va., and AUBURN, Al. - The women's track and field team had several strong performances on the closing days of the Liberty Collegiate Invitational in Lynchburg, Va., and the Auburn Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Al.
The trio of Gwen Ricco, Erika Martin and Julie McCauley completed the final three heptathlon events at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex on the campus of Liberty University. Ricco, who had begun the day in seventh, put on a late surge with top-five finishes in the final two events to finish fifth overall with 4,166 points. Martin (4,011 points) claimed a seventh overall finish, while McCauley (3,594 points) finished in 11th place.
At Auburn University's Hutsell-Rosen Track, freshman Allison Johnson and senior Kim Vos posted the best finishes of the day for the Deacons by taking fourth in the 400m hurdles and the 800m run. Freshman Mytoia Gathings also had a top-10 finish in the 200m dash after finishing in 24.65.
The Deacons will return to the track next Friday for the Spec Towns Invitational in Athens, Ga., and the action will continue on Saturday.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown of each competition from the final days of the Liberty Collegiate Invitational and the Auburn Tiger Invitational.
Liberty Collegiate Invitational
Long Jump (Event 5 of 7)
Freshman Julie McCauley led the way for the Deacons in the event, finishing fourth overall with a jump of 16-5.75 (5.02m). Fellow freshman Erika Martin placed fifth with a mark of 16-3.75 (4.97m), and sophomore Gwen Ricco trailed just behind, finishing sixth after jumping a distance of 15-10.5 (4.84m).
Javelin Throw (Event 6 of 7)
Gwen Ricco scored the first of her back-to-back top-five finishes with a throw of 100-03 (30.55m) to place fourth. Erika Martin recorded an eighth-place finish with a mark of 82-02 (25.04m), and Julie McCauley finished 12th with a toss of 65-08 (20.02m).
800m Run (Event 7 of 7)
Gwen Ricco, normally a sprinting specialist on the track, showed her mid-distance ability with a third-place finish and a time of 2:29.74. Erika Martin put together another solid performance, finishing in sixth place in 2:40.14. Julie McCauley crossed the line in 2:44.06 to finish 11th overall.
Shot Put
Junior Sarah Brobeck followed her fifth-place finish in the javelin throw on Friday with another fifth-place finish in the shot put. Her throw of 42-10.25 (13.06m) fell just short of her personal best mark of 43-7.25 (13.29m) set at the Wake Forest Open two weeks ago.
Discus Throw
Junior Carmen Green had a great throw of 141-02 (43.02m) to take third for Wake Forest, and Sarah Brobeck finished 15th overall with a mark of 118-06 (36.12m).
Auburn Tiger Invitational
100m Dash
Freshman Mytoia Gathings was the lone Deacon in the event, finishing 13th with a time of 12.18.
200m Dash
Mytoia Gathings and sophomore Myesha Barr each turned in a solid performance in the event. Gathings took ninth place with a time of 24.65, while Barr placed 25th overall after finishing in 25.43.
400m Dash
Myesha Barr enjoyed a 22nd-place finish after completing the race in 58.91.
400m Hurdles
Freshman Allison Johnson had one of the best performances of the day for Wake Forest as she captured fourth place in the event. Her time of 1:01.05 represents a new personal best mark.
800m Run
Senior Kim Vos powered the Deacs in the main mid-distance event, placing fourth overall with a time of 2:14.14. Freshman Caitlin Hartnett crossed the line next for Wake, earning a 10th-place finish in 2:17.35. Junior Laura Rapp also competed, finishing 19th with a time of 2:19.62.
1,500m Run
Laura Rapp posted an 11th-place finish with a time of 4:44.49.
Pole Vault
Sophomore Madison Kocher competed in the first field event of the day for the Deacs, recording a mark of 10-8.0 (3.25m) to notch an 18th-place finish.
Triple Jump
Freshman Phoebe Kershaw took 14th place overall and third place in her flight with a mark of 37-8.0 (11.48m).
High Jump
Junior Samantha Howell recorded another good mark after winning the high jump "B" competition at the Wake Forest Open, jumping to a height of 5-3.0 (1.60m) to finish in 15th place.
