WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's track and field team had a trio of top-15 finishes from Erika Martin, Gwen Ricco and Julie McCauley in the Deacon Combined Events Classic heptathlon hosted at Kentner Stadium.
Martin and McCauley each set a new personal-best points total in the heptathlon, while Ricco topped 4,000 points for the third time this season. Martin placed fourth overall with 4,615 points, Ricco was sixth with 4,499 points and McCauley finished 12th with 3,996 points. North Carolina swept the top three spots as Gabriella Gioia claimed the final victory from first-day leader Ariel Roberts in a very tight competition.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown of all the action from the final day of the Deacon Combined Events Classic.
Long Jump (Event 5 of 7)
The Deacs had two top-10 finishers in the event with freshmen Erika Martin and Julie McCauley. Martin's mark of 17-5.25 (5.31m) earned her eighth place, while McCauley's jump of 17-4.25 (5.29m) gave her ninth overall. Sophomore Gwen Ricco also placed 12th in the event with a distance of 16-1.75 (4.92m).
Javelin Throw (Event 6 of 7)
Erika Martin had her second top-five finish of the heptathlon with a toss of 105-6 (32.16m) in the javelin throw to earn a fourth-place finish. Gwen Ricco's mark of 93-9 (28.58m) gave her a seventh-place finish, while Julie McCauley placed 14th overall after a throw of 76-4 (23.27m).
800m Run (Event 7 of 7)
Gwen Ricco's time of 2:22.00 gave Wake Forest its second top-five finish of the day with a third-place showing in the mid-distance run. Erika Martin recorded an eighth-place finish with a time of 2:31.80, and Julie McCauley's mark of 2:36.40 gave her the 11th position.
The Deacons are scheduled to return to action in two separate meets on Friday, the Clemson Tiger Qualifier and the Kent Taylor Carolina Relays. These will likely be the final two meets of the season for Wake Forest and will be the last opportunity for athletes to attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
