Gathings, Golden Pace Deacs at Virginia Tech Elite Meet

BLACKSBURG, VA. - Sophomore sprinter Mytoia Gathings competed in both the 60 meters and the 200 meters to lead Wake Forest on the opening day of the Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Friday evening inside Rector Field House.
Freshman Montasia Golden finished ninth overall in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, tying her career-best time of 8.92 seconds.
The Deacs turned in a number of top-ten performances throughout the day, as Molly Binder finished fifth in the 800 meters, Anna Tessiatore finished sixth in the pole vault, and Casey Fowler claimed eighth place in the one mile run.
Action at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet will resume tomorrow with the women's high jump at 11 a.m. Track events are set to begin at 1 p.m. with the women's distance medley relay.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown of action from Day One of the Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
60 Meters (Prelims)
Mytoia Gathings led the way in the event with a time of 7.90 to claim 27th place. Myesha Barr finished 29th in 7.95, and Montasia Golden claimed 30th place in a time of 8.15. Junior Anneve Waithe crossed the finish line in 8.17 to place 31st.
60 Meter Hurdles (Prelims)
Montasia Golden narrowly missed qualifying for the finals by one spot, as she finished ninth in 8.92 seconds.
200 Meters
Four Deacs raced in the 200 meters, led by Gathings in 12th place with a time of 25.34. Barr finished 24th in 26.14, and Golden claimed 30th with a time of 26.46. Waithe also raced in the 200 meters, finishing 37th in 27.30.
800 Meters
Senior Molly Binder turned in a season-best time of 2:12.10 en route to a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters.
One Mile Run
Casey Fowler was just one second off her personal-best time in the event, finishing eighth overall in 5:05.46.
3,000 Meters
Freshman Kaitlyn Oliver turned in a strong performance in the 3,000 meters, finishing seventh overall in 10:14.68. Junior Allison Homer followed directly behind in eighth place with a time of 10:17.82.
Pole Vault
Freshman Anna Tessiatore competed in the pole vault for the second consecutive week, finishing sixth overall by clearing a height of 10-8 (3.25 meters).
Long Jump
Senior Erin Brooks led the way for the Deacs in the long jump, just as she has done all season, finishing fifth overall with a mark of 18-11.75 (5.78 meters). Sophomore pentathlete Julie McCauley also competed in the long jump, placing 17th with a jump of 16-10.5 (5.14 meters).
