WINSTON-SALEM and RALEIGH, N.C. - Erika Martin and Julie McCauley represented the Wake Forest women's track and field team in the heptathlon at the Winston-Salem State Invitational on Friday afternoon at Civitan Park.
The sophomore duo currently sits in third (Martin, 2,699 points) and fourth (McCauley, 2,507 points) overall with the first four out of seven total events completed. While neither claimed an individual victory in any of the events, each finished fourth or better in every competition. Crystal Webley, a member of Winston-Salem State's squad, currently leads the overall standings with 2,785 points.
The meet will resume early Saturday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m., and both the heptathlon and decathlon are slated to be completed in tomorrow's action.
In Raleigh, Caitlin Crawford and Casey Fowler competed for the Deacons in the Raleigh Relays at NC State's Paul H. Derr Track on Friday evening.
Crawford, a week removed from a win in the 1,500m run at the VertKlasse Meeting, brought home second place in Section III of the same event with a time of 4:31.22. Fowler, who was competing in Section II, placed seventh overall in 4:34.74.
The action at the Raleigh Relays will resume at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning with the men's discus throw and the women's shot put and will run until approximately 4:35 p.m. when the men's and women's 4x400m relays will conclude the meet.
Following is an event-by-event recap of the action from Day 1 of the Winston-Salem State Invitational on Friday.
100m Hurdles (Event 1 of 7)
Martin and McCauley stayed close together in the first event, finishing in back-to-back positions of third and fourth. Martin posted a time of 15.50, while McCauley's mark of 16.22 represents a new outdoor personal best in the event.
High Jump (Event 2 of 7)
In the lone event in which the duo did not record back-to-back finishes, Martin earned a second-place finish while McCauley took fourth overall. Martin leaped to a height of 5-1.25 (1.56m), and McCauley trailed just behind with a height of 4-8.75 (1.44m).
Shot Put (Event 3 of 7)

200m Dash (Event 4 of 7)
McCauley took third overall by just a split-second over Martin. Her time of 26.68 was just a couple of tenths of a second faster than Martin's 26.92, which gave her fourth place.
