Martin, McCauley Lead Deacs on Opening Day of ACC Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sophomores Erika Martin and Julie McCauley currently rank eighth and ninth, respectively, after completing four events in the women's heptathlon at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Virginia's Lannigan Track in Charlottesville, Va.
Martin has earned 2,799 points through four events, while McCauley owns a total of 2,088 points.
In the first event, the 100 meter hurdles, Martin finished seventh in 15.18 while McCauley claimed ninth place in 19.18. In the high jump, Martin tied for fifth with a jump of 5-2.25 (1.58 meters) and McCauley finished ninth with a mark of 4-6 (1.37 meters).
Martin set a new personal-best mark in the shot put at 32-8.5 (9.97 meters) to finish fifth, and McCauley came in at eighth place with a throw of 30-9.25 (9.38 meters). In the final event of the day, the 200 meters, McCauley finished sixth in 26.62 and Martin crossed the line in 26.64 to place seventh.
On the men's side, Ben Lincoln finished third overall in the javelin throw en route to breaking his own school record in the event on Thursday evening.
Lincoln broke his own school record of 234-3 (71.41 meters) with a throw of 240-3 (73.23) to finish third and earn All-ACC honors in the event for the third consecutive season. Lincoln also broke the record for the previous top throw at Lannigan Track, which was set in 2001 by UVA's Brian Koller with a mark of 73.06 meters.
Freshman Patrick Donelan finished sixth in the javelin with a career-best throw of 201-8, shattering his previous top mark of 183-9 (56.01 meters). Senior Trey Blanton finished close behind in eighth place in the javelin with a throw of 185-11 (56.68 meters), just less than a meter shy of his career best mark of 186-9 (56.93 meters).
On the track for the Deacs, junior Garret Drogosch set a new personal-best mark of 30:13.47 in the 10,000 meters en route to finishing eighth overall. The Westlake Village, Calif., native shaved nearly 30 seconds off his previous top time of 30:42.48 in the event.
In the hammer throw, K.C. Barrett placed 12th overall with a mark of 148-2 (45.16 meters), while Nate Wooten claimed 13th place with a throw of 141-0 (42.98 meters).
Alex Hill currently sits in fourth place in the decathlon standings with 3,712 points after an impressive performance in the first five events of the competition. Hill opened the day with a fifth-place finish in the 100 meters (11.19) and followed with a new personal-best mark of 22-9.25 (6.94 meters) in the long jump to place third.
In the shot put, Hill also set a new career-best mark with a throw of 41-6 (12.65 meters) to place fourth, and he tied for fourth in the high jump by clearing a height of 6-2 (1.88 meters). In the final event of the day, the 400 meters, Hill raced to an eighth-place finish in a time of 51.39.
Decathlon and heptathlon action will resume tomorrow at noon and 1 p.m., respectively. Running events begin at 4 p.m. with the preliminary rounds of the men's 1500 meter run, while field events are set to start at 3 p.m. with the women's pole vault.
