CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Pedro Dumont, Aws Laaribi and Jaya Billa earned the first wins of their Wake Forest careers as the Demon Deacons competed in the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. Friday.
Laaribi, a freshman, impressed in his college debut, knocking off seventh-seeded Alejandro Gomez of Kentucky 7-5, 6-4 in the first round of his singles flight. He was unable to pull off another upset in the quarterfinals however, falling to Virginia's 46th-ranked Ryan Shane.
Billa, a junior who had played in only one college tournament prior to this season, took down Louisville's Alex Gornet in three sets for his first career win.
Dumont, who transferred from Mississippi State, earned his win in doubles, teaming with Adam Lee to take down George Washington's team of Nikita Fomin and Danil Zelenkov 8-6. Dumont and Lee will face No. 18 David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury in the semifinals tomorrow.
Lee also posted a win in singles against Binghamton's Alexander Maisin before dropping a tight three-setter to NC State's Robbie Mudge in the quarterfinals. It was Lee's first singles loss in 13 matches, breaking a winning streak that dated back to March.
Jon Ho earned a solid victory in the Orange Singles consolation, defeating Kentucky's Panav Jha 7-5, 6-3, while Sam Bloom took down Carlos Benito of Georgia Tech in three sets in the Unranked Draw.
