CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Christine Conroe notched three goals and an assist as the No. 17 Wake Forest field hockey team upset No. 3 Virginia 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in ACC action.

The victory over the No. 3-ranked Cavaliers was the first victory over a top-five team for the Demon Deacons since Nov. 7, 2008 when they defeated the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels in the ACC tournament semifinals.

Wake Forest improves to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the ACC with the victory, while the Cavaliers drop their first ACC match of the season and fall to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

The third-ranked Cavaliers took an early 1-0 lead at the 5:53 mark. Caleigh Foust scored her 11th goal of the season, firing a shot from the top of the circle off a pass from Emilia Tapsall to give Virginia the lead.

Conroe tallied her first two goals in the first half to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 lead at the half. Her first goal came off a penalty corner at the 13:07 mark as Anna Kozniuk found her after the corner was taken and her shot was deflected in. Her second gave Wake Forest a 2-1 lead at the half at the 28:00 mark. Kali Vicars rifled a long pass from outside the circle and Conroe was on the end of it to finish it off.

After the break, Conroe gave the Deacs a 3-1 lead at the 45:28 mark. Kozniuk set her up again on another penalty corner and she finished it off.

Virginia was awarded a penalty stroke several minutes later and Tara Vittese scored for her 13th of the season to bring the match within one at 3-2.

Kozniuk scored her 11th of the season at the 60:51 mark to give the Deacs a 4-2 advantage. She finished off what was again a well-executed penalty corner that was set up by Conroe and Shannon Eby..

Maddie DeCerbo was able to muster one more goal for the Cavaliers as she knocked in a goal at the 63:18 mark off a pass from Vittese, but Wake Forest would hold on to take a 4-3 victory.
