
Merckle Wins Javelin Throw at Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA - Jessie Merckle earned her third javelin victory of 2014 as three of the four Deacons in action posted top-10 finishes on the opening day of the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday.
Merckle's throw of 170-11 (52.09m) to win the javelin throw was the second longest of her young career, while Michael Cyphers and Charlie Ionata also added top-10 finishes in their respective events.
Saturday's events will get underway at 11 a.m. with the women's high jump and pole vault that will feature Demon Deacon athletes Nyki Caldwell and Sydney White, and the action will conclude at 5 p.m. with the men's and women's 4x400m relays.
Following is an event-by-event recap of Wake Forest's performances from the opening day of the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday.
Women's Long Jump
Multi-event athlete Alyssa Thompson posted a jump of 18-6 (5.64m) on Friday evening to place 17th overall in the competition.
Men's Pole Vault
Michael Cyphers earned his sixth top-10 outdoor finish in his signature event on Friday, placing sixth overall after a strong leap of 15-8.25 (4.78m).
Women's Javelin Throw
Two-time reigning ACC champion Jessie Merckle earned her third victory this season with a superb mark of 170-11 (52.09m). That throw was the second longest of her career and was just behind her school-record toss of 177-0 (53.94m) at the ACC Championships in April.
Men's Hammer Throw
Freshman Charlie Ionata logged his third-longest throw of the season, posting a heave of 198-0 (60.35m) to finish fourth overall in the event. That result also gave him his eighth top-10 finish in the hammer throw during the 2014 season.
