WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest rising sophomore Casidy Callahan competed at the 2014 USA Track & Field Junior National Championship in two events this past weekend in Eugene, Ore.
Callahan had her second-best throw ever in the discus, a mark of 47.09m (154-06), to place eighth at the meet and sixth among collegiate competitors on Sunday.
Callahan also placed ninth in the hammer throw on Saturday with a mark of 48.04m (157-07).
Callahan had a record-breaking freshman season for Wake Forest, setting school outdoor records in the hammer and the discus. Callahan broke the hammer record twice, first with a mark of 52.30m at the Wake Forest Open and then again with a mark of 52.90m at the HPU VertKlasse Meeting in early April.
The Doraville, Ga. native also broke the discus record at the High Point meet with a throw of 47.88m to shatter the previous record which had stood since 1992.
On the men's side, Wake Forest rising sophomore Charlie Ionata won the Junior National Championship in the hammer throw on Sunday. Ionata, who set the school record in the event this past spring, threw the 6k implement 67.70m (222-1) to win the event, surpass the IAAF standard and qualify for the 2014 World Junior Championships, scheduled for July 22-27 in Eugene.
Ionata will begin preliminary group competition at the world meet on Thursday, July 24, with the hammer finals to follow on Friday, July 25. The 2014 World Junior Championships will mark the first time the event has ever been held in the United States.
Ionata's national championship adds to an already impressive start to his Demon Deacon career. The Barrington, R.I. native had a record-breaking season as a freshman, setting a school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 61.30m at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in March.
Ionata also competed in the hammer at the NCAA Regionals, finishing 27th overall with a mark of 198-11 (60.62m). He broke the 60-meter barrier four times this past spring.
