Wake Forest Finishes Third at Furman Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Wake Forest finished third overall on Saturday at the Furman Classic, as junior Kent Garrett led the way in 14th place individually for the Demon Deacons.
Garrett was coming off an individual title at the season-opening Covered Bridge Open on Aug. 29 and once again paced the Deacons. Garrett finished the 8k course in 25:08.24.
Sophomore Jacob Poyner and senior Alexander Rose were not far behind. Poyner was 16th in 25:15.43, while Rose was 17th in 25:18.94.
The Deacons had to contend with the rolling terrain at the Furman Golf Course, which a featured European-style cross country course. Competitors ran a 2k loop, hopping over a log and two hale bales each time through the loop.
Sophomore Simon Holden placed 22nd in 25:35.02, while senior Connor Crowley rounded out the scoring five in 25th in 25:39.09. Sophomore Alex Giacco was right behind Crowley, finishing in 25:41.75 for 26th.
Wake Forest finished third as a team with 92 points, trailing meet host Furman (21) and Auburn (67). The Deacons edged out ACC rival Clemson, who had 98 points on the day.
Wake Forest returns to action in two weeks at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 26. The meet will be a preview of the ACC Championships, which will be held on the same course on Oct. 31.
