WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior runner Kyle Graves crushed the school record in the indoor mile in the Camel City Elite as the Wake Forest track and field teams completed the Hilton Garden Invitational on Saturday at the JDL Fast Track.
After the conversion from his recorded flat track time of 4:02.71, Graves set the new school record crossing the finish line with a sub converted time of 3:59.66 during the Camel City Elite. The sub conversion is the standard calculated time for a standard track. Comparing his results to the national performance list, Graves jumps into the top-10 in the men's mile in the NCAA and into the top-five in the ACC.
In addition to Graves' record-breaking performance six Deacons had top finishes and five performers set new personal records.
Leading the way for the women, Sydney White finished first versus other college competitors in the unseeded pole vault. Also, three women's athletes earned new personal records. Gabrielle Merritt set a PR in the mile run, while Nikolete Hurrinus and Mia Wilson set PRs in the 200m.
For the men, Simon Holden had a first place finish in the men's mile in a new personal record time of 4:10.95. Michael Cyphers also earned a top finish, taking the best finish among collegiate competitors in the unseeded pole vault. In the men's shot put, John Maurins, Steve Michaelsen and Rusty Provins all finished in third, fourth, and fifth respectively to earn top-five finishes. Also, Samuel Lewis set a new personal record while running in the mile with Holden.
The team returns to competition, heading back to Blacksburg, Va., Feb. 6 and 7, to compete in the Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
