Deacons Complete Day One at Virginia Tech Challenge

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams completed day one of the Virginia Tech Challenge on Friday evening.
For the women, five competitors had top-five finishes in their respective events, while five also set new personal records. Leading the way was Catherine Allen and Montasia Golden who earned top three finishes in their events. Allen finished in third place in the mile and set a new personal record in the event. Golden had a second place finish in the triple jump.
In addition, Madison Bragg, Andrea Vahoua and Hunter Roberts earned top-five finishes. Amy Collins set two new personal records in the 60m dash and 60m hurdles and Kathryn Lazarchick set a personal best in the mile run. Roberts also set a personal record in the 60m dash.
Leading the way for the men was the weight throwers. Charlie Ionata, Kyle Johnson, and John Maurins earned top-10 finishes in the event. Maurins added to his achievement setting a new personal record in the event.
Ikem Okwudiafor and Alexander Krall rounded out the men's competitors with seventh and eighth place finishes respectively in the 60 hurdles. Both qualified for the finals in the preliminary round.
Wake Forest will continue competition at the Virginia Tech Challenge tomorrow. The Deacons will also be competing in the UCS Invitational and the Alex Wilson Invitational.
