WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest utilized two more home runs and strong pitching from a plethora of underclassmen to defeat UConn, 6-2, at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park on Tuesday night.
After Nate Mondou hit his fifth homer early in the game, Keegan Maronpot broke a 2-2 tie with a go-ahead, two-run single in the sixth inning.
Will Craig hit a two-run blast, his seventh of the season and 15th of his career, to give the Demon Deacons (14-8) two more insurance runs, more than enough for the Wake Forest bullpen.
The Huskies (10-7) mustered two runs on just five hits against the Wake Forest pitching staff which featured three freshman, a redshirt-freshman and a sophomore.
Andrew Loepprich made his first-career start and second-career outing, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out four while allowing one hit and a pair of walks.
Paul Kirkpatrick and Parker Johnson (1-0) combined to work the next 3.0 innings, before Donnie Sellers and Connor Johnstone shut the door.
Sellers didn't allow a hit in 2.0 innings, walking one and striking out one, while Johnstone retired the side in order in the ninth on just 10 pitches.
Ben Breazeale finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and run scored, and Stuart Fairchild had a hit and scored twice.
For UConn, Ryan Radue (1-1) took the loss after allowing his first four runs of the season. Andrew Zapata started and allowed two earned runs in 5.0 innings, and Bryan Daniello finished with a pair of hits.
FIGHTING FOR A SPOT
Making just his fifth start, Keegan Maronpot improved his average from .263 to .304, driving in the two go-ahead runs with a line-drive single into right-center.
Andrew Loepprich hadn't cracked the rotation until last week at Elon. He followed his scoreless two-inning debut with three more scoreless frames tonight.
THE 3-4 HITTERS
Nate Mondou and Will Craig continued their hitting tear, as the pair has now combined for 12 homers.
That total is more than Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Boston College and Duke have as teams, and equal to NC State.
