STATESBORO, Ga. - Senior Cyrus Stewart opened the Schenkel Invitational with a career-low 67 to tie for second place and lift Wake Forest to third place in the team standings on Friday.

As a team, the 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons posted a 9-under 279 and are in third place behind No. 6 Vanderbilt (273) and No. 11 Auburn (274).

"It was a nice round today for the Demon Deacons at 9-under," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We got solid play from top to bottom. We had a few holes that got away but also did some really good things. We are playing in the last group tomorrow and can't ask for more than that."

Stewart tied his career-low with Friday's 67 and is tied for second place with Vanderbilt's Matthias Schwab. He also carded a 67 in the final round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship on Oct. 19, 2014. Stewart was 4-under at the turn and dropped to 6-under with an eagle on 12. Stewart hit his first bump of the day with bogeys on 15 and 17 but finished strong with a birdie on 18 to card a 5-under 67.

Danny Guise was the second of three Demon Deacons to eagle the 12th hole on Friday. The eagle dropped him to 3-under for the day where he finished the round with a 69. He is tied for 11th. Will Zalatoris also carded an eagle on 12 that moved him to 3-under for the day. He posted back-to-back bogeys on 13 and 14 and followed with a birdie on 16 to finish the day with a 2-under 70 and tied for 17th.

Clancy Waugh and David Womble both finished the opening round at 1-over 73. Waugh was 4-under through the opening seven holes but struggled on the back nine. With a birdie on 18 he dropped to 1-over for the round. Womble was steady throughout the round with 13 pars, including each of the last six holes.

Woody Woodward and Paul McBride both competed as individuals at the tournament. Woodward carded a 2-under 70 and is tied with Zalatoris at 17th in the individual standings. McBride finished Friday at 1-under 71.

The tournament, originally scheduled to end Sunday, will now wrap up on Saturday with 36 holes due to impending inclement weather.

The Demon Deacons are looking for their seventh win all time at the Schenkel Invitational. Wake Forest won the event in 1972, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1986 and 2003. A Demon Deacon has been the individual winner at Schenkel six times: Jim Simons (1972), Curtis Strange (1974), Robert Wrenn (1978), Gary Halberg (1979), Chris Kite (1986) and Brent Wanner (2003).
