STATESBORO, Ga. - Wake Forest finished tied for fifth at the Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern at the Forest Heights Country Club. Once again the Demon Deacons were led by Will Zalatoris who tied for ninth.
The tournament was shortened to two days due to inclement weather. The teams played 36 holes on Saturday.
Wake Forest carded rounds of 279-289-279 to tie NC State for fifth in the field. The Demon Deacons were just one stroke behind Kentucky and three strokes behind host Georgia Southern.
Zalatoris capped off the weekend with a 6-under 66 in the third round to boost him to a ninth place finish. After rounds of 70 and 72 the freshman found his way in to the top 10 with the final round 66. Zalatoris has been under par in every tournament this season.
Senior Cyrus Stewart followed his career-low opening round of 67 with a 73 on Saturday morning and a 71 in the final round. He finished with a 4-under 211 and tied for 19th in the individual standings. His 211 is tied for the lowest 54-hole score in his career. He also shot a 211 at the Seahawk Intercollegiate his freshman season.
Danny Guise finished one stroke behind Stewart with a score of 212 (69-72-71) and tied for 24th. Davis Womble gave Wake Forest four scores under par in the third round with a 1-under 71. He finished the tournament at even-par with a 216.
Clancy Waugh had his best round of the weekend in the final 18 with an even-par 72 to follow a 75 on Saturday morning.
Woody Woodward and Paul McBride competed as individuals at the Schenkel Invitational. Woodward tied for 12th with a 5-under 209 (70-68-71). This was Woodward's best collegiate tournament, six strokes better than the 215 he carded at the Marshall Invitational. McBride was 1-over par with a 217 (71-68-78).
Wake Forest will head to Awendaw, S.C. for the Hootie at Bulls Bay March 29-31. Last year the Demon Deacons finished fifth at the event led by a top-10 finish from Guise. The Deacons won the event in 2006 and 2007.
