WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest cranked out six more doubles and another home run to defeat Charlotte, 8-6, at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park on Tuesday night.
Justin Yurchak led the way offensively, finishing 1-for-2 with a two-run homer, also walking twice and scoring three times.
Three relievers, Donnie Sellers, Parker Johnson and John McCarren combined to allow two runs on five hits over the final 5.2 innings to maintain the early lead for the Demon Deacons (16-10).
The first four Demon Deacon batters in the second inning reached base, starting a five-run rally against the 49ers (7-12). Will Craig doubled, Yurchak walked, and Stuart Fairchild singled to load the bases.
Gavin Sheets plated two runs with a double down the right-field line before Charlotte struck out the next two batters.
Jonathan Pryor walked, setting up a bases-clearing double by Bruce Steel, his first of two two-baggers, to make the score 5-0.
An RBI infield single and two-run blast from Zach Jarrett cut the margin to 5-3 in the third, but Sheets knocked in Fairchild with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-3.
Charlotte recorded a sacrifice fly in the fourth, nullified an inning later when Yurchak hit his third longball of the season over the right-field wall to close out the Wake Forest scoring.
The 49ers scored twice in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but McCarren forced a groundout to close out the game.
Craig, Steel and Fairchild each finished with two hits, while Donnie Sellers earned the win to improve to 2-1.
Trevor Gay (1-2) took the loss for Charlotte, allowing six earned runs in 2.1 innings. The 49ers were led by Brett Netzer and Hunter Jones, as each tallied three hits.
PARADE OF EXTRA-BASE HITS
The Demon Deacons came into the game leading the nation with 69 doubles and ranking second with 30 home runs.
Wake Forest added to both of those totals. Out of the 10 hits against Charlotte, six were doubles and one was a home run. The other three were singles.
GETTING UNDER CONTROL
Heading into Sunday's game, Wake Forest pitchers had walked an average of 5.39 batters per game.
After allowing two walks both Sunday and tonight, the Deacons have lowered that average to 5.13.
150
With the win over Charlotte, head coach Tom Walter reached the 150-win plateau while at Wake Forest.
He averaged more than 26 wins per season in each of his first five years as a Demon Deacon.
