Deacons Turn in Strong Performances at Spec Towns

ATHENS, Ga. - The Wake Forest track and field teams finished strong capturing five event titles and several personal bests on the final day of the Spec Towns Invitational on Saturday.
Max Adams took the championship in the discus throw setting a new personal record distance of 52.67m (172-10) in the event. John Maurins had a strong overall meet as he earned PRs in the shot put (18.31m/60-1), discus (48.85m/158-11), and hammer (51.14m/167-9). Charlie Ionata finished third in the javelin with a distance of 55.06m (180-8). Steve Michaelsen also set a new personal record in the shot put.
Jessie Merckle led the way in the field events for the women taking the javelin championship. Sydney White turned in a strong showing at the Spec Towns Invitational finishing tied for second in the pole vault. She just missed her school record height of 4.20m, but was able to clear 4.15m (13-7.25). Nyki Caldwell finished fourth in the high jump clearing 1.72m (5-7.75). Casidy Callahan earned two top-five finishes in the hammer and discus throw. Also, Megan Reardon set a new personal record in the javelin throw.
In the running events, Kathryn Lazarchick led the way capturing two championships in Athens, Ga. in the 1500m and 800m on Saturday. Gabrielle Merritt claimed the 3000m steeplechase championship and also moved up to seventh on the Wake Forest All-Time Performance list with her time of 11:17.64. Samantha Jones came in right behind Lazarchick in the 1500m finishing in second place.
Wake Forest returns to competition next weekend at the Virginia Invitational on April 17-18 in Charlottesville, Va. The Deacons will continue to improve their times and marks before the ACC Championships begin.
