Wake Forest Heads to Highlander and Penn Relays

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest track and field teams will divide up this weekend to compete at the Penn Relays and Highlander Invitational this weekend.
The majority of the athletes will be competing at Highlander at Radford University, while throwers Jessie Merckle, Charlie Ionata, John Maurins, and Casidy Callahan will compete at the Penn Relays.
Merckle's best throw in the javelin this season ranks fourth in the NCAA and second in the ACC. Ionata and Maurins rank in the NCAA top-20 in the hammer and shot put respectively, and Ionata has the school record in the hammer. Callahan owns school records in both the discus and hammer throw, while Merckle has the javelin record.
Last weekend, Simon Holden set the school record in the 1,500m and will look to improve his time this weekend at the Highlander. Samantha Jones moved to fifth on the Wake Forest all-time performance list in the 5,000m and her time ranked 22nd in the NCAA.
In addition, high jumper Nyki Caldwell and pole vaulters Sydney White and Michael Cyphers, will look to improve their marks as the season gets closer to the beginning of the ACC Championships. All three rank in the top-25 in the NCAA with their current season-best marks.
The Penn Relays start today and will end on Saturday, while the Highlander Invitational begins tomorrow and will conclude on Saturday.
