RADFORD, Va. - Wake Forest posted a strong first day at the Highlander Invitational this weekend, with Catharine Allen finishing first in the 1500m run and Thomas Ross taking first in the 3000m steeplechase. Emily Campbell also claimed second in the discus throw for the Demon Deacons.
Allen ran a 4:33.51 in the 1500m run to take first place, marking the third event in which Wake forest finished first in the meet.
In the women's discus throw, Campbell threw a 43.81m to finish in second place. That mark was just off her personal best, which she set earlier this month at the Virginia Challenge.
Ross, a senior, posted a time of 9:47.52 in the steeplechase, followed by teammate Alexander Giacco in second. He smashed his previous personal best of 9:55.31, set on April 18 at the Phoenix Invitational.
The Demon Deacons took all three top spots in the men's 5000m run. Jake Poyner, Conner Crowley, and Evan Little finished in that order. Poyner set a new personal best with a time of 14:40.94.
Aiden McConnell added to the strong results for the Deacons in throws, taking third place in the men's javelin throw with a mark of 49.73m.
Megan Reardon also finished fourth in the women's javelin with a mark of 37.74m.
Katie Adair set a mark of 3.96m in the women's pole vault, good for second in the competition. That is her best mark this year.
The Demon Deacons will continue competition at the Highlander Invitational tomorrow.
