WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With the regular season now complete, the Wake Forest track and field teams will head to Florida State University this week to compete in the 2015 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 14-16 at Mike Long Track.
Competition begins Thursday at 10 a.m. with the men's hammer throw. Other highlights include the first four stages of the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon, and other field events, including the men's and women's long jump competition and women's hammer throw. The women's 10,000-meter finals are set for 8:10 p.m., followed by the men's 10,000 meters at 8:55 p.m.
A full slate of events and preliminaries continues Friday and Saturday, with finals in most of the running events wrapping up the Championship Saturday evening. Each day will be broadcast on ESPN3 for the afternoon and evening events only.
The Deacons have shown much success this season thus far setting three school records across both teams and several others entering or moving up on the Wake Forest All-Time performance list.
Simon Holden holds the school record in the 1,500m with a time of 3.41:90 at the Virginia Challenge, which ranks fifth in the ACC this season. He also set a new personal best in the 800m of 1:48.36 ranks second in the conference and was just two seconds off the school record time.
Charlie Ionata was the second Deacon to set a school record this season. He tossed the hammer for a distance of 64.14m (210-5) at the Georgia Invitational last weekend. He currently ranks third on the ACC performance list at this point in the season. His mark surpassed his previous school record of 63.88m (209-7) that he also set at the same track at the Spec Towns Invitational earlier this season.
Casidy Callahan set the third school record of the season, and is the only female to set a school record this season thus far. In the discus, she tossed a record distance of 48.85m (160-3) at the Florida Relays.
Several other Deacons have performed well this season and rank well in the ACC and nationally. Reigning 2014 ACC Women's Javelin Champion Jessie Merckle didn't set her career best yet this season, but her top mark of 51.46m (168-10) at the Wake Forest Open ranks third in the ACC and 11th in the NCAA.
The men's freshmen throwers have made an impact so far this season. John Maurins mark a statement in the shot put at the Penn Relays, a famous and well known meet at the national level. He set a meet record in the shot put, while setting a new personal best distance of 18.63m (61-1.5). The distance ranks fifth in the ACC and second in Wake Forest history heading into the championships. Max Adams has also turned in a solid season and his top mark in the discus ranks second in school history and his shot put mark ranks in the top-five on the all-time list.
Kathryn Lazarchick has had an impressive season thus far as she has finished top-three in every race she has run this season in both the 800m and 1500m events. Samantha Jones entered the top-five on the Wake Forest all-time list for the 5,000m with a time of 16:12.44, which is the fifth best time for the event in program history.
Also, look for strong performances this week from the men's and women's pole vaulters for Wake Forest. Sydney White, a 2014 All-American, will look to top her career-best mark in the event of 4.20m (13-9.25), which currently stands as a school record. For the men's side, Michael Cyphers will look to top his outdoor personal-best and school record height of 5.05m (16-6.75) at the championships.
