WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track & field programs were each honored as U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic teams for the 2014-15 season last week while a total of six student-athletes were named to the organization's All-Academic Individual teams.
From the men's side, Kyle Graves, Sebastian Fischbach, Simon Holden and Alexander Krall were each honored while Kathleen Darling and Kathryn Lazarchick earned the honor on the women's side.
Both Graves and Holden have earned the honor on multiple occasions, as Graves is now a three-time honoree while Holden a two-time honoree. Both Fischbach, a freshman, and Krall are first-time winners of the award. Both Darling and Lazarchick are also first-time honorees.
Overall, 224 women's teams and 123 men's teams were named All-Academic teams this season while 838 women and 529 men across the nation earned the distinction.
This year, Graves and Holden also earned All-ACC Academic Outdoor honors. Graves earned First Team All-American honors in the 1,500m this spring in finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships, becoming the first Wake Forest male track & field athlete to earn the honor since Michael Bingham in 2009. He set personal-best marks in the outdoor 1,500m, outdoor 5,000m, indoor 3,000m and indoor mile this season.
Holden, a Mathematics major, had a very successful second year with the Demon Deacons, as he set personal bests in each event he ran, including the outdoor 800m, outdoor 1,500m, indoor mile and indoor 1,000m. He holds the program record in the 1,500m and is second in the 800m. Krall, a Chemistry major that competes in heptathlon, set 13 personal bests through the indoor and outdoor seasons this year while Fischbach enjoyed a very successful freshman campaign in establishing high marks moving forward in his career.
Darling, a junior English major, set personal bests in the outdoor 1,500m, indoor 3,000m, outdoor 5,000m and outdoor 10,000m and earned Second Team All-ACC honors with a fourth-place finish at the ACC Outdoor Championships in the 10,000m. Lazarchick, a sophomore who is undeclared, also made a sizeable leap between her freshman and sophomore campaigns, as she set personal bests in the outdoor 800, outdoor 1,500 and indoor mile.
To be eligible for the individual awards, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of two athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships, which includes the preliminary rounds.
To qualify for the team award, the program is required to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The men's team earned a 3.15 GPA this year and the women's team finished with a 3.10.
