WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team fell to No. 15 Old Dominion, 3-2, in overtime on Friday at Kentner Stadium. After a back-and-forth regulation the Monarchs won the game with a goal less than five minutes in to the overtime period.
With the loss, Wake Forest drops to 5-2 on the season with both losses coming against ranked opponents in overtime. Old Dominion improves to 5-1 on the season.
The Monarchs took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 12th minute from Carrie Sensenig. Old Dominion controlled possession early and the goal from Sensenig was set up by the early aggression. After the goal the game was played evenly for the remainder of the half.
After halftime Wake Forest came out and put pressure on the Old Dominion defense, finally cracking through in the 46th minute. Senior Jess Newak scored her fifth goal of the season to tie the game 1-1. Newak scored on a line shot set up on a penalty corner. She was assisted by Jessy Silfer and Shannon Eby.
Exactly two minutes later the Demon Deacons took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Jule Grashoff. The freshman collected a pass from Madi Julius, dribbled around a defender, a fired a shot in to the left corner for her fifth goal of the season.
Wake Forest's lead was short-lived. In the 52nd minute Old Dominion knotted the score 2-2. Sarah Breen took a shot from the top of the circle that found its way in to the back of the cage.
The game headed to overtime where it looked like Newak might notch her second goal of the night. The senior carried the ball all the way in to the circle but her shot was just wide left of the goal. Just 50 seconds later on the Monarchs' counter attack Catalina Barahona swept in a shot for the game-winner.
Old Dominion held a 9-7 advantage while the teams each registered three penalty corners. Senior Valerie Dahmen made four saves for Wake Forest. Kealsie Robled had three saves for Old Dominion.
Wake Forest hosts No. 13 Liberty on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Kentner Stadium. This is just the fourth meeting between the Deacons and Liberty. Wake Forest leads the series 2-1 but the Flames earned the win last year. Liberty is 5-1 this season with the only loss coming at No. 11 Louisville.
