LYNCHBURG, Va. -- No. 18 Wake Forest defeated Liberty 3-1 on Sunday in Lynchburg, Virginia to close out the regular season.
Wake Forest (10-7) and Liberty (7-9) got off to a quiet start. Liberty's Serena Barr finally put a team on the board in the 27th minute with a low-goal that snuck past Cat O'Connor. However, Jule Grashoff quickly evened the score in the 30th minute off a penalty corner assisted by Emily Conroe and Megan Anderson. The teams entered halftime tied 1-1.
The second half was all Wake Forest. Grashoff netted her second goal of the contest in the 54th minute off a penalty stroke. Sarah Thornhill extended the Demon Deacons' lead in the 63rd minute off a right-side goal with an assist from Grashoff. Wake Forest managed to get off seven shots in the second period while a tough defense held the Flames to just three. The Deacs finished the game with a 3-1 victory.
Grashoff's two goals brings her season total to 13. She has recorded five goals in the past two contests, thanks to a hat trick in the 9-1 victory over Appalachian St. on Oct. 28.
Cat O'Connor recorded two saves in the game to bring her season total to 50. She improves to a 9-6 record.
No. 7-seed Wake Forest plays No. 2-seed Syracuse in the first round of the 2016 ACC Field Hockey Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 3. The game is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be held at Kentner Stadium.
