WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams got their outdoor seasons underway on the first day of the Wake Forest Open on Friday at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Between the two teams, the Demon Deacons came away with a pair of first-place finishes and nine top-five finishes.
Following an indoor season in which he won the weight throw competition in five meets to lead the team in event wins, Charlie Ionata was the champion in the men's hammer throw with a personal record toss of 65.15m. The junior was followed in the top 10 by teammates Kyle Johnson in fourth and John Maurins in seventh.
Also picking up an event title was Alexandria Florent, who was making her collegiate outdoor debut. The rookie's 1.78m jump was five and a half inches higher than the next highest finisher and three inches higher than her top mark from the indoor season.
In addition to Florent, five Deacon women placed in the top five of their events. Hunter Roberts had a runner up time of 13.93 seconds in the 100m hurdles prelims, while Samantha Jones and Jenna Truedson came in third in their respective 1,500m races. Aubrey Waggoner finished two spots behind Truedson to place fifth and Andrea Vahoua's 52.85m hammer throw slotted her fourth.
On the men's side, Michael Cyphers took fourth place in the pole vault, clearing 4.99m.
The Wake Forest Open concludes on Saturday with events beginning as early as 9 a.m. The Demon Deacons will compete at the Raleigh Relays next week.
