WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --
The 29th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team swept a home doubleheader Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, upsetting 10th-ranked Virginia, 4-3, before downing East Carolina, 6-1.

The Demon Deacons defeated the Cavaliers for the first time since 2008 and took down a top-10 opponent for the first time since defeating No. 4 North Carolina, 4-3, on March 1, 2007.

The victories pushed the Deacs' overall record to 15-4 and the win over Virginia gave them a 4-3 mark in ACC play.

Wake Forest opened the day with a resilient performance in doubles. After Virginia won at the No. 2 position, Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko doubled up the nation's No. 25-ranked tandem of Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelley, 6-3, at No. 1. It was the Deacon duo's first win over a ranked pairing.

To claim the doubles point, Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza Andrade offset a 6-5 deficit to force a tiebreaker. They dominated the breaker, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before winning, 7-2.

Joanna Zalewski gave the hosts a 2-0 lead by quickly downing No. 83 Stephanie Nauta, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. From there, however, the Cavaliers rallied with wins at the top two spots by the No. 4 Collins and No. 13 Julia Elbaba, respectively, and a three-set victory by Meghan Kelley at No. 6 to take a 3-2 lead.

With her team trailing in the match, Samantha Asch came through at No. 5, seizing a first set tiebreaker and winning a 6-3 decision in her second set to even the score.

The dual match came down to No. 3 singles, where Ulyashchenko headed to a third set with No. 64 Skylar Morton after winning the opener, 6-4, and dropping the next stanza, 6-2. In the decisive set, the Deacon rookie fell down a service break and trailed, 4-3, before storming back to win the final three games to give her team the triumph.

The Deacs are now 6-4 on the year against ranked competition. Additionally, Asch's singles win made her the 39th Demon Deacon all-time to reach 100 wins in singles and doubles combined. She joined teammates Guerin, Fernandez, Kasey Gardiner and Zue Zhang.
