WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The 29th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team swept a home doubleheader Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, upsetting 10th-ranked Virginia, 4-3, before downing East Carolina, 6-1.
The Demon Deacons defeated the Cavaliers for the first time since 2008 and took down a top-10 opponent for the first time since defeating No. 4 North Carolina, 4-3, on March 1, 2007.
The victories pushed the Deacs' overall record to 15-4 and the win over Virginia gave them a 4-3 mark in ACC play.
No. 29 Wake Forest 4, No. 10 Virginia 3
Wake Forest opened the day with a resilient performance in doubles. After Virginia won at the No. 2 position, Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko doubled up the nation's No. 25-ranked tandem of Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelley, 6-3, at No. 1. It was the Deacon duo's first win over a ranked pairing.
To claim the doubles point, Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza Andrade offset a 6-5 deficit to force a tiebreaker. They dominated the breaker, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before winning, 7-2.
Joanna Zalewski gave the hosts a 2-0 lead by quickly downing No. 83 Stephanie Nauta, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. From there, however, the Cavaliers rallied with wins at the top two spots by the No. 4 Collins and No. 13 Julia Elbaba, respectively, and a three-set victory by Meghan Kelley at No. 6 to take a 3-2 lead.
With her team trailing in the match, Samantha Asch came through at No. 5, seizing a first set tiebreaker and winning a 6-3 decision in her second set to even the score.
The dual match came down to No. 3 singles, where Ulyashchenko headed to a third set with No. 64 Skylar Morton after winning the opener, 6-4, and dropping the next stanza, 6-2. In the decisive set, the Deacon rookie fell down a service break and trailed, 4-3, before storming back to win the final three games to give her team the triumph.
The Deacs are now 6-4 on the year against ranked competition. Additionally, Asch's singles win made her the 39th Demon Deacon all-time to reach 100 wins in singles and doubles combined. She joined teammates Guerin, Fernandez, Kasey Gardiner and Zue Zhang.

The Deacons started fast in their second match of the day en route to a 6-1 win. Moments apart, Wake Forest doubles pairings of Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza Andrade and Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko earned 6-1 victories at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles, respectively, to secure the first point of the match.
To lock up the team win, Ulyashchenko won in straight sets at No. 2, Joanna Zalewski did the same at No. 3 and fellow freshman Davis followed suit in the top spot.
After Samantha Asch retired due to illness three games into her match, Fernandez made it 5-1with a win at No. 4. Xue Zhang capped the evening by battling back from a 6-4, 4-2 deficit. She won her second-set tiebreaker before dominating in a 10-2 match tiebreaker to make it a 6-1 final.
