HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team began play Friday at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the Long Cove Club. The Demon Deacons are in 11th place after the first round of the event, which features 12 of the top 50 teams in the nation, including the top four in the latest Golfstat rankings.
Wake Forest shot a 16-over round of 300 during the first day of the tournament.
The Demon Deacons were led by a pair of freshmen during the first round. Jennifer Kupcho shot an even-par round of 71 and is T-9th on the individual leaderboard. Fellow freshman Ines Laklalech had a 3-over round of 74 to open the tournament.
Sierra Sims and Antonia Eberhard rounded out the scoring four for Wake Forest with first round scores of 77 and 78, respectively. Mariana Sims had a first round 80, while Erica Herr, competing as an individual, shot a first round 78.
"The team played better today, especially considering the windy and cold conditions," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "Jennifer finished really strong, birdieing three of the last four holes. We are doing better, but there is still room for improvement. We are looking forward to the next two days."
The tournament continues Saturday and runs through Sunday at the Long Cove Club.
