WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Harvard took advantage of a strong pitching effort to hand Wake Forest its first home loss, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at David Couch Ballpark.

The Crimson (2-1) used a four-run second inning to grab a lead which held up for the rest of the game.

Despite the loss, Will Craig remained hot at the plate, recording two hits, an RBI and a walk. Jonathan Pryor scored two of the three Demon Deacon (8-3) runs.

After giving up five straight hits, including three consecutive doubles, in the four-run second inning, right-hander Connor Johnstone settled in to retire 14 of the next 15 hitters from the second through sixth innings.

The relief corps was strong once again as right-handers Chris Farish and Donnie Sellers combined to retire all eight batters they faced from the seventh through the ninth.

For Harvard, Nick Gruener allowed three runs - two earned - in 6.0 innings while striking out five. Nick Scahill struck out six in 3.0 hitless innings to earn the save.

Wake Forest opened up the scoring in the first inning as Pryor led off with a double and scored the game's first run on a wild pick off attempt at first base. The error put runners at the corners for Craig, who drilled an RBI single to spot the Deacs an early 2-0 lead.

After Harvard's four-run inning, the Deacons cut the Harvard lead in half an inning later as Kevin Conway plated Pryor on an RBI double.

Harvard's offense was held dormant until the seventh, when second basemen Mitch Klug delivered an RBI single. The Crimson added another run as Klug came in to score on a sacrifice fly.

Wake Forest rallied in the sixth after a Joey Rodriguez double put the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, but a strikeout would end the threat.

Though the hit totals for the two teams were even at eight apiece, Harvard was 5-for-5 with runners in scoring position while Wake was just 1-for-7.

The Demon Deacons close out the weekend on Sunday, playing host to Richmond at 2 p.m.
