HIGH POINT, N.C. – Jessie Merckle's record-breaking javelin throw highlighted a busy day for the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams on Friday. The Demon Deacons had 22 athletes compete at the High Point VertKlasse Meeting at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C. and four representatives at the Florida Relays at James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.
Merckle was one of two Deacon event winners on the day, launching a school-record 56.91m javelin throw to win the title at the VertKlasse Meeting. Her toss was 2.97m further than her own previous Wake Forest record and was 4.44m further than the mark of High Point's Christine Rickert, Friday's runner up. The throw ranks second nationally this season.
Also placing in first at High Point was Samantha Jones, who used a time of 4:34.88 to beat out 90 other competitors in the women's 1,500m. Less than 10 seconds off Jones' pace was teammate Jenna Truedson, who came in ninth.
Wake Forest also shined in the men's and women's steeplechase at High Point. Sarah Fahmy led a trio of top-10 Deacs with a runner-up finish on the women's side, while Peter Millsaps and Kent Garrett finished seventh and eighth, respectively, for the men.
Also registering top-10 finishes at the VertKlasse were Tylor Harris and Craig Corti. Harris had a sixth-place shot put mark of 15.82m, while Corti came in 10th in the 5,000m, clocking in at 14:59.89.
In Gainesville, Robert Heppenstall and Simon Holden were impressive for the Deacs in the 800m. Heppenstall came in sixth with a time of 1:47.76, 1.02 seconds shy of the school record, while Holden took eighth by crossing the finish line 0.28 seconds later.
Also in action at the Florida Relays were Sebastian Fischbach and Sydney White. Fischbach placed 13th in the men's 1,500m with a 3:45.61 showing, while White took 14th in the women's pole vault with a 3.90m mark.
The Demon Deacons wrap up competition at both meets on Saturday and will resume their outdoor schedule next week at the Tennessee Relays.
