CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams completed the first of two days of the Virginia Challenge at Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Va. on Friday. Robert Heppenstall and Max Adams took home event titles to highlight the Demon Deacons' day.
Heppenstall clocked in at 1:46.92 in the 800m to capture the victory, falling just .18 seconds shy of Warren Sherman's school record from 1995. The win was Heppenstall's first on the outdoor season and was his first overall since winning at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in February.
Adams used a personal-record toss of 54.07m to win the discus throw, which had a field of 20. Adams won the same event at the Campbell Invitational last week.
Also performing well for the Deacs on Friday was Charlie Ionata, who had a fourth-place 62.15m hammer throw and Alexander Krall, who enters Saturday in fifth place in the men's decathlon though five events.
On the women's side, Casidy Callahan and Alva Hicks placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the discus, while Hicks and Andrea Vahoua took ninth place and 10th place, respectively, in the hammer throw.
Tesia Kempski tied the best pole vault mark of her rookie campaign with a ninth-place height of 3.75m, while Kathryn Lazarchick placed 14th in the 800m with a personal-best time of 2:09.30. In the heptathlon, Amy Collins is in seventh after four events.
The Deacons wrap up competition at the Virginia Challenge on Saturday. They will also compete at the Elon Invitational in their final day of action until May 7.
